Washington, DC — Today, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced its decision to approve New England Wind – an offshore wind project capable of providing reliable, clean energy to nearly one million homes and businesses across the region.
This Record of Decision for America’s eighth major offshore wind project follows a month of historic milestones in the development of the U.S. offshore wind power market, including announcements on community and workforce opportunities, robust market competition, and expanded turbine construction. Just last month, South Fork Wind came fully online, Sunrise Wind was approved, updated Treasury guidance was provided to drive offshore wind investments in energy communities, and four new bids came in for a first-in-the-nation, tri-state offshore wind procurement in New England. Turn Forward celebrates these achievements and the strong momentum they demonstrate to kick off an exciting year for offshore wind.
“Thanks to the commitment of the Biden administration, there are now enough permitted offshore wind projects to power as many as 4 million homes and businesses (and counting), while creating thousands of good, high-paying jobs across America,” said Catherine Bowes, Senior Director at Turn Forward. “As our demand for electricity rises, offshore wind projects will play an increasingly critical part in the strong, clean energy grid we need to keep the lights on, in addition to creating good, local jobs, and making the U.S. less reliant on foreign energy markets.”
