New York — Today, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced South Fork Wind is fully operational with all 12 turbines up and running. At the beginning of this year, the project began generating clean, offshore wind from its first six turbines. Now, with all turbines online, South Fork Wind is providing clean, locally-produced energy to 70,000 Long Island homes and businesses. Turn Forward is celebrating this historic milestone and the work of dedicated advocates, developers, community leaders, and public officials at all levels of government that made it happen.

“Seeing South Fork Wind fully producing power for Long Island proves that a thriving clean energy economy is not only possible, it’s happening right now with offshore wind,” Stephanie McClellan, Executive Director of Turn Forward said. “As the first commercial-scale offshore wind project to finish construction and generate power, South Fork Wind has made a lasting impact on America, New York, and the region through the creation of nearly 1,000 jobs — many of them filled by local union workers — and a supply chain that stretched all the way to Texas. South Fork Wind is a testament to the vision, commitment, and years of hard work by cross-sector leaders to bring this critically needed and transformational new clean energy source online.”

South Fork Wind is a 132 megawatt, commercial-scale offshore wind farm located in federal waters approximately 35 miles east of Long Island. With all 12 turbines installed and online, South Fork Wind is now powering 70,000 New York homes with offshore wind energy. The project is expected to eliminate up to six million tons of carbon emissions over a 25-year period.

Thanks to the collaboration and leadership of local, state, and federal policymakers along with community, conservation, and labor leaders, South Fork Wind will help New York reach its clean energy goals and help the U.S. further unlock domestic, clean, reliable energy. Offshore wind will create 77,000 good-paying jobs and power 10 million homes within the next decade.

Turn Forward is an independent, non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to advancing an ambitious vision for American offshore wind power that meets today’s climate, economic, equity and environmental challenges.
