Today, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced its Record of Decision for Sunrise Wind, the U.S’s seventh commercial scale offshore wind project to be approved. Sunrise Wind is an approximately 924 MW offshore wind project with the capacity to power nearly 600,000 homes in New York. Turn Forward praised local, state, and federal leaders for their commitment and collaboration in  advancing this and other critical offshore wind energy projects.

“Right on the heels of the country’s first commercial scale offshore wind project coming online, the Biden Administration has approved Sunrise Wind and brought it one step closer to delivering its own clean offshore wind power to New York. Sunrise Wind will bring significant investments to the domestic supply chain across the country, create even more good-paying jobs, and provide secure, clean energy to hundreds of thousands of homes in New York,” said Catherine Bowes, Senior Director at Turn Forward. “With seven projects approved and many more in the permitting pipeline, momentum for American offshore wind energy is building and the industry and its supply chain’s benefits continue to spread across the country.”

Sunrise Wind is a joint partnership between Orsted and Eversource and is estimated to be fully operational in 2025. The project is estimated to generate 800 direct jobs throughout its construction and will drive substantial investments in economic and workforce development across the region.

Turn Forward is an independent, non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to advancing an ambitious vision for American offshore wind power that meets today’s climate, economic, equity and environmental challenges.
