Washington, D.C. — Today, Revolution Wind, a joint offshore wind energy project between Orsted and Eversource, began construction off the coast of southern New England. Once complete, the project will generate over 700 MW — 304 MW for Connecticut and 400 MW for Rhode Island — which is enough electricity to power 350,000 homes across the region.

“The biggest year yet for U.S. offshore wind construction has arrived, as workers along the eastern seaboard head out to build projects that will power four states from Massachusetts to Virginia with clean, local offshore wind energy,” said Catherine Bowes, Senior Director of Turn Forward. “Offshore wind projects like Revolution Wind are currently delivering transformational benefits to communities across the country by providing reliable, domestic power that can help stabilize energy prices, generate thousands of good-paying jobs, drive millions of dollars in local economic investment, and reduce pollution.”

Revolution Wind is creating 1,200 direct construction jobs and dozens of permanent operations and maintenance jobs across Connecticut and Rhode Island, in addition to thousands of indirect or induced jobs that support the project. Connecticut’s New London State Pier, a redevelopment project that has played a key role in staging and assembling turbines for South Fork Wind, has also created hundreds of good-paying construction jobs to support Revolution Wind and is on track to become a regional hub for the U.S. offshore wind industry.

Momentum for offshore wind power in the U.S. continues to grow, with two projects online, several actively under construction, and many more in the development pipeline to meet the growing offshore wind goals of states on all coasts. Currently, there are enough offshore wind projects in various stages of development to power 4 million homes and businesses, and Americans will benefit even more as projects come online, helping meet energy demand and stabilize prices.

Turn Forward is an independent, non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to advancing an ambitious vision for American offshore wind power that meets today’s climate, economic, equity, and environmental challenges.
